Indian Customs (CBIC) Gold Allowance & Weight Limits
Indian citizens returning home after staying abroad for more than six months are allowed to carry a limited quantity of gold jewelry duty-free.
1. Duty-Free Limits by Passenger Gender
The CBIC sets distinct weight thresholds depending on the gender of the passenger under the newly enacted Baggage Rules 2026:
- Female Passengers: Allowed to bring gold jewelry up to a maximum weight of 40 grams duty-free (value ceilings removed under Baggage Rules 2026).
- Male Passengers: Allowed to bring gold jewelry up to a maximum weight of 20 grams duty-free (value ceilings removed under Baggage Rules 2026).
- Children: Children who have resided abroad for more than one year are also eligible for the duty-free allowance.
2. Excluded Gold Items (Coins & Bars)
Note that the duty-free exemption applies **strictly to gold jewelry**. It does **not** apply to gold coins, gold biscuits, or gold bullion bars. All coins and bullion bars must be declared immediately upon arrival and are subject to standard import duties.
3. Customs Duty on Excess Gold
If you carry gold exceeding the duty-free allowance, you must declare it at the customs Red Channel. The concessional duty rate is approximately 15% (including BCD + Cess + IGST) for weights up to 1kg. Carrying undeclared gold in excess of limits can lead to confiscation, fines, and prosecution.
